Paul ‘Bozak’ Morrissey

DJ Profile Biography

Paul Morrissey started dejaying in 1974, long before it became cool to be a DJ. As well as putting on his local parties he secured a stand-in spot at a local venue called Fanny’s, this soon became his own and first residency playing his mix of soul and funk.  His influences included Motown and Stax and especially the Philly Sound which later went on to be his signature sound full of funk influences, lush instrumental arrangements, sweeping strings and piercing horns.

The late 70s saw Paul take a long running residency at Bath’s famous Tiffanys hosting its weekly soul night and also guesting at various Bristol nights with soul stalwarts Seymour and Dennis Richards who were early mentors. During this period Paul would further his musical education at The Royalty, Goldmine, The Belvedere and a personal favourite being The Rio where he became good friends with one of his biggest musical influences, Chris D Smith.

In 1984 Paul Morrissey was invited to guest at Nicky Holloway’s London Bridge gig, The Royal Oak. Paul went on to become a regular and to play at Nicky’s Doo’s At The Zoo, the Special Branch Bognor Weekenders and the original Special Branch weeks in Ibiza. Other regular guest spots came playing next to the likes of Trevor Fung at Ziggys in Streatham alongside Paul Oakenfold and Carl Cox.

Around this time Paul bought his own nightclub Sanbournes in Bristol. Hosting his weekly soul nights with the likes of Nicky Holloway, Trevor Fung, Robbie Vincent and Chris Hill. Sanbourne’s also boasted its own 6T’s night and a residency by Bristol’s Wild Bunch (now Massive Attack). These gigs brought him to the attention of the Caister Weekender promoters who invited Paul to join the Caister crew at their bi annual events.  Having been a regular at the Norfolk weekender, this was a long-time dream come true.

During the nineties Paul had long running residencies at Bristol’s finest House nights Fish Dude, Revolution, Gorgeous and Karanga still pioneering his unique soulful sound and often reverting back to his soul and jazz-funk roots playing alongside his long time friend Andy Smith, the then Portishead tour DJ.

In 2002 Paul and Dynamo Productions (Andy Smith & Scott Hendy) took up residency in room 3 at Fabric and later moved onto Steve Lawler’s “Harlem Nights” at The END and continued with regular guest spots at Bristol’s Drive By, Cardiff’s Lamerica, Garage City with Bobby & Steve and the Jazz Café in London.

Paul hosted Defected’s bi-monthly residency in Bristol alongside his own Rhythm & Soul night.  Whether he is playing for Groove Odyssey, Campsoul or his own Love Soul and Soul Deep promotions, you will always hear a mix of what he loves best. For his love of house, his residency at God Made Me Funky at Bournemouth’s Winchester is going from strength to strength.

Paul has been a stalwart of the pro audio industry as technical manager at the Vestax Corporation and Soundcraft as the product manager responsible for bringing back the iconic UREI product range. Since 2007 Paul has been busy running his own audio company Analog Developments and steering the revival of the Bozak product range, which is history in the making with the likes of Terry Hunter, Louie Vega, Danny Krivit and Black Coffee endorsing the brand internationally.

House, Northern Soul, Motown, Disco, Jazz-Funk or Boogie, his collection is so eclectic and with almost 40 years of experience as a DJ, his love of everything soulful continues ever stronger.
