We last did a show with him at Knebworth Soul All Dayer 30 years ago. It’s going to be a fantastic weekend”. LOTW promise to give the soul campers exclusive performances featuring songs from their new album, as well as, performing their classic chart and club hits incl. Time, No.1 Girl, I Shot The Sheriff, Keep The Dream Alive and of course the massive UK anthem London Town and many more soul & funk favourites! (not to be missed).
Lonnie Liston Smith and The New Cosmic Echoes
Lonnie Liston Smith was born 28th December, 1940 in Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A. One of contemporary music’s most versatile musicians. In a career that spans some 40 years, he has been headlined in a variety of recordings as a featured sideman for some of jazz funk music’s most illustrious leaders, before stepping out to reveal his own original concepts as a bandleader in the mid 70s. He was introduced to music at an early age by his father and learned piano, tuba, trumpet and voice in high school and college. After graduating from Baltimore’s Morgan State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in music education, he soon launched himself into performance, working with the house band at the Royal Theater, Baltimore. He moved to New York and nurtured his talent with jazz greats like Art Blakey and Miles Davis, moving from acoustic jazz to fusion, before forming his own group Lonnie Liston Smith And The Cosmic Echoes in 1973. He is renowned for defying genres, blending atmospheric fusion, soul and funk and is often quoted as a strong influence on acid jazz. He is a keyboardist of the first rank and has influenced a generation of young players who have acknowledged his rhythmic (swing), harmonic acumen and composing skills.
To say we are chuffed to have him at Campsoul would be an understatement!
