DJ Profile Biography
Paul ‘Clarky’ Clark started DJing in 1977 at the Seven Stars in Brighton, he was resident at the Inn Place, Papillon & Busbys on a Sunday, which was voted #10 in Blues & Soul’s top clubs.
Paul played jazz-funk-soul for 11 years and as well as being known nationally, he became #1 DJ on the south coast. In ’82 he played one of his best ever gigs – Caister Soul Weekender #10 with over 4000 people and the Brighton Beach Party at the Top Rank. The following year he was at the Brighton Belle with Fatboy Cooke and Carl Cox and in ’85 began residencies at Brightons new Escape Club and Hilly’s Sheffield Park, he was also resident with Chris Hill, Tongy & Jeff Young and was #3 DJ at Canvey Island’s Goldmine. Following years were at Special Branch in Ibiza with Rampling / Masters / Tong / Peterson & Holloway and Corfu gigs with De la Soul.
In ’88 acid house arrived and with partner Warrick Armsby Ward created their best night Shoom with the Ramplings. He had regular slots at Queens, Colnbrook with support Rocky & Diesel, Phil Perrys club with Dave Courtney on the door. 1990 saw Paul in Detroit for a week with Blake Baxter, he also played Boston (Cheers). Paul returned to the Escape in ’94 with a Saturday residency with Russell Small and guests; Sister Bliss /Boy George / Farley / X-Press 2 / Fatboy and Rampling. He also had regular spots at the Emporium in Coalville, Swansea’s Escape and the House in Nottingham.
Paul finished DJing in 1999 due to promoter changes.
Due to huge demand Paul has returned to the ones and twos (now CDs!) and has appeared at To Escape to The 90s, The Heist Brighton, Inn Place, Papillon, Bournemouth Soul Weekender, Solar Radio All Dayers, Chocolate Chip Brighton, Dantes Bognor, Stage 3, East Anglian Soul Weekender, Summer Soulstice, Med Soul, Egyptian Soul, Heavy Soul Cambridge, Clacton, Richard’s Parties, The Surgery London, Bar One Ascot, Brass Monkey Hastings, Campsoul Music Festival, The Rio Didcot, The Jetty Canvey Island, Revenge of the Soul Boy, Summer Madness and Ibiza Soul Week.
Paul also runs Music Meltdown, Brighton’s first collectors record shop www.musicmeltdown.co.uk/ and has a radio show ‘Seaside Vibes’ every Saturday 4-6pm on Zero Radio.
